1% Well Read Challenge

After noticing that a lot of my fellow bloggers were taking part in this challenge, I became very curious and had to find out what it entailed.
Before I knew it I was completely hooked and lo and behold another challenge is added to my already blooming challenge list.
This challenge involves reading 1% of the 1001 books you should read before you die. From what I can gather, there are three possible challenges I can follow. They are:

1)Read 10 titles from the original list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.

2)Read 10 titles from the new list from March 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009.

3)Read 13 titles from the combined list (of almost 1300 titles) from March 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010. In other words, “What were they thinking dropping titles from Dostoevsky and Jane Austen?”
It appears that the original list of books for the challenge was altered last year making a new 1001 books you should read, so the 3 challenges above take into account the old list and the new list.
If you click on the picture button above, it will take you directly to the challenge, just in case you have missed it and would like to have a go.
I have decided to follow option no 2 - to read 10 books from the new list. The lists can be found on the website linked to the picture button.
I had a good look through the list and here are my possible choices for the challenge.
1) A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian by Marina Lewycke
2) Fingersmith by Sarah Waters
3) Atonement by Ian McEwan
4) Life of Pi by Yann Martell
5) White Teeth by Zadie Smith
6) Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
7) The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
8) The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster
9) Beloved by Toni Morrison
10) Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Since reading through the list, I found that I already had quite a few of these books in my collection to read already, so I don't feel like I am taking on too much.
I look forward to taking up the challenge.

  1. I didn't like Atonement but it looks like both of us are going to be reading Life of Pi and Love in the Time of Cholera.

  4. Good luck on this challenge. It's the only reading challenge I participate in. Great books as well.. I've not read the Gabriel Garcia Marquez book, and I'm only partway through Atonement, but I've read the others. I'm so glad Fingersmith and The New York Trilogy is on your list!

  6. great challenge, good luck with it!
Memoirs of a Geisha is fabulous, and I liked the film too. I'm curious to see your thoughts on Love in the Time of Cholera. I thought the writing was poetic, but I had a problem with the main character.
