The Galaxy Book Awards

On Sunday night the Galaxy Book Awards were held in London. The Galaxy book awards are known as the Oscars of the book world and are a very big event in England, with all the stars attending. The show was hosted by Judy Finnegan and Richard Madeley, who run the Richard and Judy book club, which is as big in England as the Oprah book club is in America.

I thought you all might like to see who won the awards and see how many of the winner's books you have read.

The Galaxy Book of the Year Award - The Suspicions of Mr Whicher by Kate Summerscale

Outstanding Achievement - Michael Palin.

Borders Author of the Year - The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

Tescos Biography of the Year - Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama

Books Direct Crime Thriller of the Year - The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Sainsburys Popular Fiction Award - Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks

Play.com Popular Non Fiction Award - The Suspicions of Mr Whicher by Kate Summerscale

Waterstones New Writer of the Year Award - Child 44 by Tom Robb Smith

WHSmith Children's Book of the Year - Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer

I have linked each winner up to the Galaxy website where you can read about each book and see the other books shortlisted in each category.

These awards are normally voted for by the public, so they give a good indication of what the public of Great Britain are reading.

So there are the winners of the year. I only have two of this collection - Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer and The Suspicion of Mr Whicher by Kate Summerscale.

I definitely want to read The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga and Child 44 by Tom Robb Smith, so I hope to add them to my collection. I also have been meaning to read Michael Palin's travel books for years, so now I think I shall dip into them.

Which ones have you read? Which ones have you heard about?

  1. Sounds like an interesting list of books. I've only read 2 of them, Breaking Dawn and Dreams from my Father. Will have to check out some of the other ones. I've been tempted to read Child 44.

  2. I'm so glad you mentioned this because sadly I've never heard of The Galaxy Book Awards (hangs head in shame). I do have a few of those on my list and look forward to getting to them (particularly the Suspicions of Mr. Whicher).

  5. I haven't read any of them, but some are on The List: The White Tiger, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, and I'd like to read something by Sebastian Faulks sometime.
