Sunday Salon - help me I am an addict!

Help, it is official. I am a book buying addict and seriously need some help. Yesterday I bought seven books and the day before I bought six! OK, they were all from charity shops, so I didn't pay a lot for them and some of them were on my TBR list, but still it is not good is it.

I definitely buy books as a comfort thing. At Christmas, I made a big decision to lose weight and the biggest thing I needed to overcome was my comfort eating. I would always eat if I was distressed or unhappy. I am quite a highly strung person, so as you could imagine I would eat a lot. So when I started to lose weight, I had to find another comfort blanket and I found that in books. If I am upset I buy a book (normally secondhand). I figured that I don't smoke and definitely don't drink so where is the harm. Two full bookcases later and I am starting to worry. Luckily I have a very understanding and practical husband, whose answer is just to buy more book shelves. He is having visions of a library in our next house! So the buying will continue, as the weight loss continues. When I reach my goal weight I may just have a quick clothes buying obsession, but then it will be back to books!

Anyway, enough of my waffling, this week I have finished reading two books and read another one. They are as follows:

1) The Spook's Secret by Joseph Delaney

2) Beloved by Toni Morrison

3) The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer

This week I have started reading the following three books.

1) Mudbound by Hilary Jordan. A book for the Southern Reading Challenge.

2) The Shamers Signet by Lene Kaaberbol, the second book in the Shamers Chronicles.

3) The Gorgons Gaze by Julia Golding, the second book in the Companions Quartet.

I am also reading a couple of books for You Gotta Read Reviews which you will find here.

This week I am hoping for some down time as my house has just been so hectic this week. What kind of week are you hoping for?

  3. I always justify my book buying purchases when they're from thrift stories, charity drives. :P And it sounds like you have a very supportive husband (yay!)

Good luck achieving your down time around the house. I'm on the count down for school to end. The last month is *always* so hectic and stressful. :)

  4. Oooh, I can't wait to read Mudbound. It's been on my wish list for a long time.

I bought books yesterday, too. I can't help it. You are right...it is a comfort thing. I was so happy when I got home and logged the books into my Librarything account. :)

  8. I'm another serial book buyer. For years, I told myself it was okay because I didn't really buy anything else: just food, books, bus passes, and the occasional piece of clothing. Then my TBR list hit 170, and I figured I needed to make a change. I've been really, really good about the book buying this year, but it's starting to drive me nuts! There are so very, very many good books out there, and I can't rush out and purchase them! Gah!

  9. I'm afraid you may be asking the wrong community for help. I think most of us are book buying addicts. LOL. My addiction has gotten better in the last year. I look at it this way - I can read all those books if I ever retire. Seriously though, I know what you mean about addictions. I've never had them when it comes to the bad things for us like smoking, drinking or drugs, but I can when it comes to things like shopping. I've also noticed that when I've had enough - just like too much food - that I eventually stop and move on to something else. Just remember to give yourself credit for losing weight and doing something good - reading books. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of Mudbound. Have a good week.

  10. Lol, welcome to the club!! I have about 40 unread books sitting at home, and I just ordered two more from Amazon.com today... Guess we just need to join Bookaholics anonymous...

  11. Yep, as far as addictions go, there's a whole lot worse to choose from. So I say just keep on buying!

I really want to read Mudbound!

  12. Mudbound!! I can't wait to start reading it.

Unread books is just the way of life for a bookworm. It's great that your husband is so understanding. Happy shopping and reading! =)

  13. Well I'm an addict too so I can relate. I don't smoke or drink either so I consider books my one vice. Unfortunately for me I'm still eating too much though. Way to go with your weight loss Viv-that's just great! I really need to get on board with mine. Lucky you to have a husband so understanding. I'm sure most of us could use a few more bookshelves. I know I could!

  14. hahaha, If you want us to sympathise we will, but if you want us to tell you how bad you are, and you should stop. LMAO not gonna happen!!
Your post cracked me up :-)

  15. You're really lucky to have such a supportive husband. Mine grumbled at the lack of space so much that my bookshelves were moved into the garage and the loft. I'm on a strict no buying new books policy. Secondhand books are fine as is the book-swapping site, but I'm not sure what the point is sometimes when all I ever read are library books! I need to self-impose a read-your-own-books month, I think.

  16. I'm hoping for a weekend where I don't have to clean the entire time! Hubby and the guys work on the house during the weekend and I usually go behind them cleaning up the mess they made. Sure hope I don't have at least as big of a mess as I did last weekend!

Enjoy your books! I really want to read TGLPPPS myself...

  18. Haha! I can totally relate to your addiction. I do really really good with the book buying and then get a whole bunch at once. Or, like you, get some and then go back and get more. Enjoy the reading!
