Monday Mailbox

Monday Mail is hosted by by Marcia at the Printed Page and you will find her blog here.

I had a bit of a splurge on new books this week. I don't normally buy brand new unless it is something I desperately want, but as we had such a horrible week last week, I decided to finally spend my book vouchers that I had been given back in April by my brother and his wife.

So hear are my books.

1) The Woods by Harlan Coben - I have read really good reviews about this book and a lot of people have recommended his books to me, so I thought I would give this one a try. It is meant to be a real thriller.

2) Sunday at Tiffany's by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet - this one intrigues me. It is about a girl who is friendly with a thirty year old man called Michael, that no one else can see, then when she grows up she runs into him again where he is still only thirty. I keep thinking this has a bit of The Time Travellers Wife in it and I just loved that book. Normally I wouldn't go for James Patterson as I am amazed at the quantity of books he writes a year with the help of other authors. Is there the slightest chance that he is just putting his name to the books to help get them published and the other writer actually wrote them. I may be way off the mark, but James Patterson seems to be writing in a lot of different genres, so how does he do it and produces so many in a year. If he is involved in the complete development of the book, then I apologise now to all his fans, but personally I am struggling to believe it. Anyone else feel that way?

The Host by Stephanie Meyer - I have avoided buying this book for such a long time. Firstly I refused to pay £12 for a paperback, so I have waited patiently for it to reduce in price to £4.49. Secondly I am scared to read it, in case I don't enjoy it. I just loved the Twilight books and I want to love this too, but this is a completely different story in a different genre and I just don't want to be disappointed.

The Glass of Time by Michael Cox - this is another thriller. with lots of dark secrets, deceit, murder and betrayal.

The Library of Shadows by Mikkel Birkgaard - translated from Danish - yet another thriller set amongst book lovers.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan - in hard back!!!
I have wanted to read this for ages, so I am really excited to have got this book.

Well these are the books I bought this week, what came through your mailbox?

  2. Ooh my sister just phoned me last night and offered to swap me her Host for my Eclipse. She said it was amazing! I wanted to read it for ages too but was the same - refused to pay that much.

Sunday at Tiffanys sounds good - I see what you are saying about him. People have done that before haven't they. Bit naughty if he is but don't suppose we will ever know.

The only book I got this week was for my Dad. I bought him the latest Wilbur Smith Assegai which apparntley links two series together in this book and he didn't even know it had been written so he was almost fit to burst which was kind of fun to watch :D I've only read one Wilbur Smith series - The River God one and I absolutely loved it so really I should read some more.

  4. It's so interesting how the books look different there than they do here. I really enjoyed The Host - it was even better than I thought it would be. The author of The Forest of Hands and Teeth is from the area I live in.

  7. Hi, Sundays at Tiffanys is the first Patterson I read that isn't a mystery type of book. Maybe it's because he wrote it with a woman. I don't know but it is different and it's sweet. I hope you enjoy it. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Harlan Coben. Have a great week and happy reading.

  8. I know what you mean about Patterson. I have been sorely disappointed with a lot of his later books (in any series), so either he is not writing them himself, or else he churns out so many, that they are written in a formula, and even the weakest reader will figure that out. I think it is borderline insulting to his fans. I am not by any chance a fan anymore, but I have enjoyed his earlier novels and mysteries, they are just not the same no more. I may in fact write a post about this, although I am afraid it may be too controversial, and I try to keep my blog non-controversial, since I feel like there are enough controversial blogs out there already...

Wanted to thank you for dropping by my places while I was gone. I am back home now, and trying to catch up on blogs, mails, tweets and all that :-)

  11. I think you will love the Host just be aware that it starts out kind of slow and yes it's totally different from Twilight but then in other ways... it's still a Stephenie Meyer book through and through.

  15. Hope I haven't upset anyone with my James Patterson comments, I am purely speculating and don't want to cause any contraversy.

  21. I loved The Woods. Can't wait for your review. In fact, I can't wait to hear what you think of most of your choices.

(Oh, and I was trepidatious about reading The Host as well.)

  22. i actually listened to the audio versions of two books you received--the host and sundays at tiffanys. both were good--the host took a bit of getting into, but i enjoyed it. SAT was okay...you have to give yourself over to the whole suspension of disbelief to make it work, though! enjoy.

  24. I don't read a lot of thrillers but I've heard that Harlan Coben is really great. Both of my parents really enjoy his work and keep trying to get me to read it (I don't care for thrillers). Enjoy the books!
