On My Wishlist (7)

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where you can list all the books you desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.

This is a bit of a golden oldie one today as I am craving two books from my past.

I spent a couple of hours on Twitter yesterday trying to track this book down, as I could not remember the author or the title, only the blot. Thankfully Lauren of  I Was A Teenage Book Geek found it for me. Lauren is having a little break from blogging at the moment, but I really do miss her posts.

Necessary Madness was a book that I read in the late nineties, published by Hodder & Stoughton and received a lot of attention when it was written.  The book deals with a wife's loss of her husband to cancer and how she copes to move on with her life. That may sound like rather a normal book to you, but what makes it special is that it was written by a 17 year old girl with no knowledge of experiencing anything like this. The book was a beautiful book and one that made me cry. I am not sure if it is in print anymore, but I would love to read it again to see if it stood the test of time.

Here is an article that came out when the book was first published.

From what I can gather, Jenn Crowell has only written one other book and now is a freelance writer and editor.

Also while conversing on Twitter yesterday, I began to discuss classic children's TV shows and remembered one called Children Of  The Stones. This was eventually made into a book published by Corgi in 1977 and written by Jeremy Burnham and Trevor Ray.

Summary from The UK Sci-Fi TV Book Guide.

There were 53 stones. When Matthew and his father, Adam, an astrophysicist, arrived in Milbury, there were 53 people in the village.
Something strange was happening to the people in the village — something connected to mysterious power sources from the past.Who was controlling this power and why? Matthew and  knew that all the answers lay in the stones...
The standing stones encircled the village of Milbury.

This book was actually based on the standing stones of Avebury, which Susie Day reminded me of yesterday.

So these two books are the ones on my wish list today,  a bit of a retro post I know but these older books should not be forgotten.

  4. I don't remember Children of The Stones at all. That cover is scary though so perhaps, even though I would be 9 at the time, I was banned from watching/reading it.

  7. Necessary Madness sounds really good. I'm always intrigued by books that are written by younger people. I find that some of them are already amazing talents.
