Kody Keplinger - You're As Beautiful As You Believe You Are

Kody Keplinger is here to talk to us about believing in our own beauty. Kody is the author of The Duff, which I will be reviewing tomorrow. Kody wrote her debut novel whilst she was a senior at high school. She has two other books already coming out in America, but her first book The Duff will be published in the UK, in April by Hodder Children's Books.
YOU’RE AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE

You are what you believe you are.

I know that’s a cliché thing to say, but the older I get, the more true it seems. Unfortunately, it’s usually not as easy as just saying, “Well, I believe I’m pretty, then.” I’ve found that it takes a lot of work to believe the things you tell yourself, but very little work to believe others.

For example, telling yourself “I look pretty today,” is not nearly as powerful as having a cute boy in your class say, “You look pretty today.”

Or, on the other hand, telling yourself, “I look pretty today,” isn’t nearly as powerful as a cute boy in your class whispering to his friend, “She’s kind of chubby.”

The words others use to describe you change how you see yourself. And it’s how you see yourself that matters, because how you see yourself ultimately impacts how others see you, too. Confidence is beauty. But that confidence can be shattered by a few choice words of another person.

But why? Why do we trust others more than we trust ourselves when it comes to how we look? Think about it. If a complete stranger walked up to you and said, “You’re a terrible human being,” you’d likely be startled and indignant. You’d likely say something like, “WTF? You don’t know me. I’m a great person. How can you judge me that way?” But if a stranger called you unattractive, there’s a chance you’d believe them.

It’s a sad cycle, because while physical appearance matters so little in the grand scheme of things, how we feel about our appearance directly impacts the kind of person we are. We let people who don’t know us make us feel like crap, but we won’t believe ourselves when we try to boost ourselves up? It’s so twisted when you really think about it.

So I have a proposition for you. From now on, when it comes to how you feel about yourself and how you look, put more faith in yourself than in others. No one knows you like you know yourself, so you’re opinion of yourself matters much more than theirs. And, in turn, when you feel good about yourself, when you see yourself as strong and beautiful, others will start to see you that way, too. It’s easier said than done, of course, but it’s something to think about.
Feel beautiful. Be beautiful.

Thank you Kody for a truly beautiful post.
The Duff goes on sale on the 5th April.
