Top Ten Tuesday is a meme organised by The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic is ten books that deal with tough subjects.
1) If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch – this book deals with some really difficult subjects and broke my heart. It covers child abuse and neglect, paedophiles and so much more. The main characters are so humble and adorable. This book is my top book so far of 2013.
2) The Long Weekend by Savita Kalhan. Another book that deals with child abuse. As a mum, I really struggled to read this compelling novel.
3) Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a beautifully poignant book. The main character, Auggie was born with severe facial deformity and the book follows his life and how people react to him.
4) The Duff by Kody Keplinger deals with body image and really makes you think about the way we view other people. How we can be judgemental about appearances.
5) Heart-Shaped Bruise by Tanya Byrne is one of the reads that rubs your emotions raw. A very compelling tale of love going wrong.
6) The Quietness by Alison Rattle. I thought this book should be in the list because it deals with a difficult and rather upsetting subject. The story is about baby farming during Victorian times. The horrible way unwanted babies were treated.

7) Speechless by Hannah Harrington is a tough read dealing with bullying in schools. It is one of the those books that really makes you think and should be used in schools to help deal with bullying.
8) Undone by Cat Clarke deals with a lot of difficult issues that teenagers face today, including cyber bullying which is something that really upsets me. This book is really an emotional rollercoaster.
9) Arabesque by Colin Mulhern This book is a really gritty read that deals with kidnap and child abuse. It really hits you in the gut.
10) She Comes Undone by Wally Lamb is one of the most depressing and upsetting books I have ever read. It was that bad I couldn’t finish it. The things that the main character Delores suffered from such a young age, it wasn’t surprising that she lost it.
I've only read Speechless, which was really good at dealing with bullying and yes, should be used in schools to show how bullying is a big issue.
ReplyDeleteOh some of these really sound heart-breaking. I've only read She's Come Undone and it's been so long that I can't remember much of it.
