Netgalley Haul

I am a Netgalley addict! It’s no good, I think I actually should be banned. I try so hard not to go on there. Then along comes a publicist who tempts me with goodies and gives me the power of auto approval and before I know it, my fingers are clicking way too fast and I am looking at a pile of virtual books that I must read. I rarely include my Netgalley books on book hauls, so I thought I might start showing them in a separate post.
So here are the e-books on my most recent Netgalley haul. *holds head down in shame*

Mind Games by Teri Terry  - Published by Hatchette Children’s Books on the 5th March 2015
This will be my first Teri Terry book. I can hear the blog kingdom screaming at me in disgust, but there you have it! It wasn’t that I didn’t want to read the Slated trilogy, because I did want to and I still do, it just didn’t happen. Then as the series progressed, I was always way behind the rest of the readers. So by reading this I get to start alongside everyone else. I wouldn’t mind but I have met Teri and she is just delightful. So for all fans of the Slated trilogy, I believe this is still up for grabs.
In a future world, life is tightly controlled by the all-powerful PareCo. Standing out from the crowd is dangerous so misfit Luna hides her secrets carefully, not realising her own power. Unlike her friends and family, Luna has never been able to plug into Realtime, PareCo's virtual world, where almost everyone now lives their lives. So how do PareCo know about Luna, and why do they want her for their elite think tank?
The truth is hidden in a web of shining silver secrets, and the corrupt authorities would do anything to keep it that way. Can Luna find a way to use her own hidden powers and bring the truth to light before it's too late?

Nightbird by Alice Hoffman – published on February 26th 2015 by Simon and Schuster UK Children’s Books.
Alice Hoffman isn’t known for her children’s books, so I am rather intrigued by this.  I still love Practical Magic, in both film and book, so I am always looking for  the next Alice Hoffman book to love.
Twig lives in a remote area of town with her mysterious brother and her mother, baker of irresistible apple pies. A new girl in town might just be Twig's first true friend, and ally in vanquishing an ancient family curse. A spellbinding tale of modern folklore set in the Berkshires, where rumours of a winged beast draw in as much tourism as the town's famed apple orchards.
Conspiracy Girl by Sarah Alderson – published by Simon and Schuster  - February 12th 2015
I love Sarah Alderson!!! I think she writes the hottest male characters going. And she writes a pretty exciting plot too.
Everybody knows about the Cooper Killings.
There was only one survivor - fifteen year-old Nic Preston.
Now eighteen, Nic is trying hard to rebuild her life. But then one night her high-security apartment is broken into. It seems the killers are back to finish the job.
Finn Carter - hacker, rule breaker, player - is the last person Nic ever wants to see again. He's the reason her mother's murderers walked free. But as the people hunting her close in, Nic has to accept that her best chance of staying alive is by staying close to Finn.
And the closer they get to the truth, and to each other, the greater the danger becomes.
Love Hurts edited by Malorie Blackman – published January 29th by Random House.
I love a good short story collection and this one comes just in time for Valentine’s Day. With Malorie Blackman leading the way and lots of UKYA authors joining our American friends, this book should be an amazing read.
Malorie Blackman brings together the best teen writers of today in a stunningly romantic collection about love against the odds. Featuring short stories and extracts about modern star-crossed lovers from stars such as Gayle Forman, Markus Zusak and Patrick Ness, and with a brand-new story from Malorie Blackman herself, Love Hurts looks at every kind of relationship, from first kiss to final heartbreak.
The Last Leaves Falling by Sarah Benwell – published by Random House on 29th January.
I am half way through this and have to say what a stunning debut so far. It is rather an emotional read.
Japanese teenager Sora is diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Lonely and isolated, Sora turns to the ancient wisdom of the samurai for guidance and comfort. But he also finds hope in the present; through the internet he finds friends that see him, not just his illness. This is a story of friendship and acceptance, and testing strength in an uncertain future.
First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen published by Hodder and Stoughton on the 29th January.
When I think magical realism, Sarah Addison Allen always comes to mind. I’ve loved all her books, especially Garden Spells. First Frost takes us back to the Waverley women from Garden Spells, to see what they are up to now.
Autumn has finally arrived in the small town of Bascom, North Carolina, heralded by a strange old man appearing with a beaten-up suitcase. He has stories to tell, stories that could change the lives of the Waverley women forever. But the Waverleys have enough trouble on their hands. Quiet Claire Waverley has started a successful new venture, Waverley's Candies, but it's nothing like she thought it would be, and it's slowly taking over her life. Claire's wild sister Sydney, still trying to leave her past behind, is about to combust with her desire for another new beginning. And Sydney's fifteen-year-old daughter Bay has given her heart away to the wrong boy and can't get it back

Me and Mr J by Rachel McIntyre – published by Egmont on the 5th February 2015
I’ve heard a lot about this book, so I am really intrigued to read it.
Lara's life has changed radically since her father lost his job. As the eldest, Lara tries to keep upbeat, and the one outlet for all her problems is her diary where she can be open about how dire everything is at home, and worse, the fact that she’s being horrifically bullied at school.
And then a shining light comes out of the darkness – the new young and MALE teacher, Mr Jagger. The one person who takes Lara seriously and notices her potential. The one person who is kind to her. The one person who she falls madly and hopelessly in love with. The one person who cannot reciprocate her feelings … can he?
So that’s my Netgalley haul from recent weeks. Are you a Netgalley  magpie? Are you tempted by all the shiny books that appear on the screen?

  1. I can't stay away from Netgalley. And I've requested 5 of these titles. Thankfully I've put better restrictions on myself so that I actually read and review the books from Netgalley in a more efficient manner (I've read and reviewed 4/5 of the books I have in common with your list!) Now I have a 5 book limit. I can't request any more until my reading list is below 5! I feel pretty good though. A few years ago my percentage ratio was 17% and over the years I've raised it to a respectable 72%! So I guess I'm not doing too badly with my over-excited, click-happy fingers :)

    1. I am impressed by your five book limit! I must get better at this. My percentage is around 40% so I need to work harder at it.
