Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Scary Reads

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created over at The Broke and the Bookish. An ideal feature for those of us who love a good list. Each week there is a different list to take part in.

This week the list is -

Halloween Freebie - so I've gone with my Top Ten favourite scary reads.
1) White Crow by Marcus Sedgwick
I wasn't expecting this book to be as scary as it was, but it had me too frightened to turn out the light after I'd read it. A macabre investigation into the existence of God.
2) The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
I love reading Susan Hill's ghost stories. She is a master at creating an eerie atmosphere. This book still stands as my favourite one of hers.
3) Unrest by Michelle Harrison
This book really creeped me out. I'd read and enjoyed Michelle's 13 trilogy and knew she had a glimmer of the dark side in her. I just wasn't expecting this to be so scary!
4) The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich
This book should come with a warning sign. It is seriously that scary.
5) Flesh and Blood by Simon Cheshire
This book is soooo gory! The last few chapters really make me feel uneasy. Not to be read before eating.
6) Under My Skin by James Dawson
I actually find this book more creepy than Say Her Name, which will undoubtedly feature on many people's lists.
7) The Hunting Ground by Cliff McNish
Cliff McNish knows how to scare the pants off you! Seriously do not read this book before bed!
8) Funland by Richard Laymon
When I was growing up, I used to read a lot of horror books and Richard Laymon was one of my go to authors. This is definitely my favourite out of all his books. It might make you reconsider going to a pier ever again.
9) Midnight Is A Lonely Place by Barbara Erskine
If you are looking for a good ghost story, Barbara Erskine never fails to fright. This was the first book of hers I ever read and still stands as my favourite.
10) The Rats by James Herbert
This book particularly creeped me out as it was set right by where I used to live. I can remember sitting at High Beech in Epping Forest, reading about the rats taking over the area. I kept checking over my shoulders to make sure it wasn't real.

So that's my Top Ten scary reads. Have you read any of these?

  4. The Woman In Black made my list this week too, but as a book that it WAY too scary for me to read!!! I'm a total wimp when it comes to scary stuff, however I totally LOVE Halloween (the fancy dress and yummy treats part at least!) I have seen the Dead House on quite a few lists this week, doesn't really sounds like it's going to be flowers and unicorns so I am probably going to stay away from that one, but I LOVE the cover! Super cool! :)

  6. I've only read The Woman in Black. I liked it, but it didn't scare me as much as I had hoped it would. I like to be really scared...afraid to turn out the lights, convinced there's something in the dark waiting for me, that kind of thing. I don't know why. I guess I just like the adrenaline. You've got a lot of good looking books on your list. I added them all to my TBR, so thanks for sharing! Here's my TTT. Happy Halloween!
