Writing Words - Hitting the First Quarter Road Block.

Why is it that no matter what I'm writing, whether it is a short or long WIP, I always hit a road block around the first quarter?

I set off from the starting line at such a pace, with words whizzing out of my brain faster than I can type, quickly getting me to the first quarter and then I hit a hurdle that stops me writing another word. Is this a common writing problem or it is just me?

I reached this point this week. To be fair, this has been a horrendous week for  even attempting to write.  Between having surprise visitors landing on my doorstep from Australia to working my butt off all week at work, I've been beyond exhausted. I haven't even read a review book, let alone written anything. I'm not going to feel guilty about this as there wasn't really anything I could do about it. Sometimes I have to let life take over.

Anyway back to my first quarter hurdle. I'm beginning to realise it is a regular problem for me. I know exactly where my story is supposed to be going. I have a fair idea of what will happen in the middle and the ending is clearly set out in my head, but the journey to get there isn't as pretty and exciting any more.

However I do have a trusty method that always gets me out of it. I use mind maps for each chapter. Just by circling the chapter number, swirling out spikes from it and letting my imagination go, I tend to come up with lots of ideas that could be included in that chapter. I normally end up with more ideas than needed,  which often allows me to write the next chapter too. So that's how I plan to get past my writing roadblock this week.  I would highly recommend it; if you find yourself stuck on what to write, do a quick mind map.
This is the nearest one I could find that resembles what I tend to produce. What methods do you use to get yourself out of a writing road block? Do you use mind maps or  have you got another strategy?

I found a great post on Notes from the Slushpile about working through writer's block, which you can read here. This is a fabulous blog for all writers to read. It is oozing with excellent writing advice.

Achievements
I'm not going to humiliate myself by sharing my achievements this week, because there really aren't any. Fingers crossed I have more time this weekend and next week and I'm more organised and ready to write and edit.

  1. The mind map is a great idea. I haven't quite reached a block before, but I'm sure it'll come. Don't be too hard on yourself for your achievements, life gets in the way and that's ok xx
