Michelle Harrison has been one of my favourite authors for many years. I can remember being so entranced by 13 Treasures. There is a subtle veil of darkness to her writing, which I adore. I often describe her as a modern day Enid Blyton. She is always one of my first recommendations to students looking for a little darker fantasy.A Pinch of Magic is the first book in a new series based around three sisters who discovered they are cursed. Betty is so traumatised by the curse, she puts all her energy into finding a way to break it, even if it means putting her sisters in danger. The three sisters are loyal, loving, courageous young girls who you warm to instantly. They have the innocence of Sabrina, but the go getting girl power of the Halliwell (Charmed) sisters. These girls are not the only tough young female characters in the book; you can't read this without being in awe of Sasha, whose historical story is interspersed between the present day action.
The world building is breathtaking. I loved the names of the islands and what type of people live on each one. The islands are unique yet shrouded with a sense of foreboding, giving the book an ethereal layer of eeriness.This book is extremely addictive. Each chapter arc ends in dramatic tension. I found myself holding my breath as the book moved towards its conclusion. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop and finished it within three days, moving straight onto the sequel. I think this is a deliciously dark and magical start to what I really hope is a long running series. Spellbinding perfection!
