What Makes Us Human?

When Andrew asked me if I wanted to take part in this blog tour, I jumped at the chance.  It sounded exciting and thought provoking.   The chance to delve into humanity and solve such a universally discussed question.  Bloggers uniting and sharing their beliefs - getting to the heart of humanity and allowing us to absorb every blogger's answers like they had been sent directly from heaven.

And then I sat down to write my post... And I sat...And I pondered...And then I panicked. I couldn't think of anything worthwhile to say about what makes us human until I read Chelle's post. I realised I had to look at myself.  I had to think what made me human.

Why am I on Earth? Why is my life so different from everyone else's? Why does everyone I know go through completely different situations ranging in difficulties? Why?
Because we are here to learn. What makes us human, is our ability to learn, specifically learning from our mistakes.

I'm a scholar. My whole life has revolved around learning and even now I get excited about learning a new skill. Finding that you are good at something new can be rather serendipitous. However, there  is a side of learning that I don't embrace. Learning the difficult lessons life sends us.

Learning has a huge effect on the people we become. We must learn from the experiences life gives us and we must learn from our mistakes. If we don't learn, we will keep repeating the same mistakes until we get it right.  Our ability to learn holds us apart from other species. And yet, we often lose sight of this.

How many of you feel like your life is on a permanent disastrous cycle?
Why do the same things keep happening to you again and again?
Why did you fall out with your best friend this time?
Why didn't that relationship work either?
I'm convinced it's a cycle.

I definitely have lessons to learn. Firstly, I need to learn patience. I'm better than I used to be but this one still needs some work.
I also need to learn to stop worrying. I worry about everything. Probably not to the degree that I did as a teenager, but I still worry about things that often don't ever happen.
My biggest lesson to learn is believing in myself, because that is one that I still can't get my head around. It doesn't take a lot to knock my self confidence.

At least I'm aware of the lessons I need to learn and I'm working towards them. Many don't even realise they are repeating the same behaviour continually because they don't get that they have to change.

You might think my opinion is a load of rubbish, but I don't care. I honestly think we are all here to learn something in life. Everyone has been set their own agenda. Hidden inside you is a lock, just waiting for you to learn the right lesson to open it. Perhaps you need to learn to love others, or maybe you need  to learn to love yourself. You might need to learn to overcome fear. The list is endless.

As far as I'm concerned, that is what makes us human. Our ability to learn from our mistakes. Because in order for us to grow as humans we must get things wrong first.

So I'm curious as to whether you agree with me. If you do, please let me know. And if you can be really honestly, tell me what you think you are here to learn?

Thanks to Andrew for letting me take part in his tour.
