My hubby is completely to blame for my book buying this week. He won £10 on the lottery and gave it to me to spend on books. So who am I to say no!1)Wedlock:How Georgian Britain's Worst Husband Met His Match by Wendy Moore - this is one the books that is being discussed on Channel 4's TV Book Club. From what I can gather this is a non fiction book based on the real story of Mary Eleanor Bowes, the richest heiress in eighteenth-century Britain. It tells the story of her brutal marriage to a handsome soldier called Andrew Robinson Stoney.
2) Gifted by Marilyn Kaye. I didn't buy this one, it was given to me by a friend who raved about it. She said I will love it. I don't know much about it, only that the main character has an extraordinary gift; similar to a character from Heroes.
3) Kiss of Life by Daniel Waters. A Young Adult book about zombies. I wish I had checked the reviews first though, as after looking on Amazon, I may have picked a dodo.
4) The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. With lots of talk about her new book 'The Swan Thieves', I thought I should try and read this one first.
5) and 6) The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. I now have the whole trilogy, so I hope to get round to reading them again this year.

ReplyDeleteI read The Swan Thieves and am hoping to read The Historian at some point this year. It seems that people who like the 1st book don't like the second and vise versa, so I am very curious to read both.

what a sweet hubby to give you his winnings for books! love it...and it looks like you picked up some good reads, too. i'll be interested to know how you liked 'the historian' as i've heard mixed reviews.
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to buying a book and then being disappointed by the reviews on Amazon. Hopefully the reviewers are wrong and you enjoy the book anyway!
ReplyDeleteI loved The Historian - I will have to look out for the new book :) I never go by reviews, most films that are panned I love and it has sometimes been the way with books too. Read yourself and make your own judgement - you obviously thought it sounded good :) Sounds interesting enough for me to go find out a bit more about it too :)

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely loved the Pullman books. Read them after hearing Subtle Knife being read on radio4 once. Definitely in my top 10. I also have his adult stories of Sally Lockhart very victorian detective female Sherlock Holmes type Enjoy! xx

What a nice hubby! I can't believe that the money went so far. In Australia you'd only buy one book for that and that's only if it was second hand. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of The Historian, I just got The Swan Thieves.

I have Kiss of Life. I bought a book ages ago and it was on a Buy One Get one Free offer. I didn't (or had already read) the other books in the offer except Kiss of Life. Besides having bad reviews, it's also the second in a series, the first, I believe, being Generation Dead.
