It is a lovely event to attend and we try and go every year.
There was a funfair in the middle of the town, surrounded by little stalls as well as a BBQ stand and candy floss trolley. In the church, the local choir were singing Christmas carols, whilst everyone watching were treated to mulled wine and mince pies.
My favourite part of the whole evening though, has to be the library sale. I went to that first before I even looked at anything else. It was a £1 a bag, which you filled up as much as possible. I ended up having two bags full of books, as the girls chose some each.
Here are the books that I purchased.
1)The Witch Trade by Michael Molloy
2) The Survival Game by Tim Wynne Jones
3) The Innocent Mag by Karen Miller
4) The Awakened Mag by Karen Miller
5) Lost and Found by Valerie Mendes
6) The Other Queen by Philippa Gregory
7) The Gift by Lewis Hyde
8) The Templar Knight by Jan Guillou
9) The Trial by Franz Kafka
10) The Flea Palace by Elif Shafak
11) Arthur and George by Julian Barnes
12) Poppy Shakespeare by Clare Allan
13) In the Wood by Tana French
14) The Dark Flight Down by Marcus Sedgwick
15) An Infamous Army by Georgette Heyer
What a fantastic haul for £2. Don't you just love a library sale!
I have to say though, my hubby was not impressed by my new haul right before Christmas. I have asked for lots of books in my Christmas stocking and my book shelves are heaving under the mountain of books already there. Perhaps I should have asked for more book shelves for Christmas.
What a great haul! I think my hubby would have felt the same way as yours did but if I had been in your shoes I'd done the same thing LOL.
ReplyDeleteThe Crusades trilogy by Jan Guillou has been very popular here in Norway. I haven't read the books yet but both my mother and my sister have read the books and they really enjoyed them. Have you read the first book in the trilogy? The books have also been made into movies which have had huge success in Norway and Sweden.
Fantastic Haul Viv, I'd have done the same but Craig would have been sidetracked by the mince pies and mulled wine and any other food and drink there so I would have been alright :D
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a lovely fayre - real old fashioned and not gimmicky. Gorgeous.
Wow. I am impressed! Now why do my library not have such cool sales, mostly old books here. So wanna read those mage books
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous, so very jealous! Enjoy your books! :)
ReplyDeleteI have those Karen Miller books but haven't read them yet. You will have to let me know what you think of them. Wow I bet that was a fun even to attend. LOL sounds like something out of a novel. Did you take pictures?? =)
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas Fayre sounds lovely! You found so many good books - I have In The Woods on my shelf and I hope to read it in 2010. Enjoy all your new books : )
ReplyDeleteLadybug - I didn't realise the Jan Guillou book was the second in a trilogy, but I shall look out for the first one now. I keep doing that lately, picking up books and not realising they are further along in a series of books. I wish the publishers would make it clearer on the covers.
ReplyDeleteCarmen - it was lovely. One of my Christmas highlights of the year.
Blodeuedd - sorry to hear your library doesn't sell better books. We seem to have an abundance here. One of our bigger libraries has opened up it's own shop, so I need to investigate that one. I can't wait to read the Mage books too.
Alice - is your book ban over soon?
Kathy - No, I didn't take any pictures as I have real trouble getting pictures in the dark. I should have taken my tripod, but I feel a bit of a wally setting it up to take pictures.
Mary - I can't wait to read In the Woods too. I have heard such great things about it.
Than I'm glad I told you :) I thought perhaps you already knew but wanted to mention it in case you didn't. I agree the publishers ought to mark books so that it is easy to see!
ReplyDeleteOh, what are we going to do with husbands? Don't they know that it's our duty to give books a home? There's nothing sadder than a homeless book. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteLibrary sales are wonderful! I'm ridiculously excited that you got The Trial. :D
ReplyDeleteWow, you did great vivienne! Library sales are not to be missed. Besides the money raised goes to such a good cause- new books. How can anyone not help out the library. :) sounds like you had a good time while you were at it.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and enjoy your new books.
This sounds like an amazing event Vivienne and what a pile of books - I'd have difficulties deciding which one to read first.
ReplyDeleteLadybug - I am really pleased you told me too.
ReplyDeleteBermudaonion - you are so funny. I will try to tell my hubby that.
Amanda - when I picked up The Trial, I actually thought of you. I remember reading your post on it.
Kaye - yes, I am helping the library to provide new books for everyone else. I will add that to my list of reasons why I should buy more!
Petty Witter - so many books and so little time to read them. What with the ones I am getting for Christmas too, I will be inundated.
What a great haul! My husband, too, is super patient with my need to have a billion books at home. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great haul! I haven't even heard of most of the books you bought, although I really enjoyed In the Woods. Enjoy all your books! (My partner complains about my habit of rescuing homeless books too, although he recently found a whole new bookcase for me in our back shed!)
ReplyDeleteThe Christmas Fayre sounds lovely.
ReplyDeleteYour last line made me laugh. Truth be told, you can never have too many books! :)
LOL- I was just thinking about where you were going to put all these books when you mentioned it. I'm thinking you're definitely going to be needing some more shelves.
ReplyDeletesounds like fun! lol you will be needing more shelves :)

Such a great find and a great deal too, but as my husband would say:
ReplyDelete"did we need those"?? LOL LOL
What a great deal on books! I can't wait until the next library book sale in our town. Unfortunately it's not until July. :)
ReplyDeleteAww - the fayre sounded perfect even WITHOUT the library sale. But two bags of books for £2 are the cherry on top :D
ReplyDeleteWhat a great sale! You did really good!
ReplyDeleteAmanda - it is good to have patient husbands!
ReplyDeleteAvisannschild - I can't wait to read In the Woods.
Suko - I think my husband may disagree with you on that point.
Dar & Naida- I shall definitely be making a trip to IKEA after Christmas. I have to get more bookshelves soon.
Diane - I don't really need anything, it is pure want!
Alyce - I hope one of our libraries will have a sale in the summer too. We have about five different branches around.
Nymeth - the Fayre was lovely. It got us all in the Christmas mood.
Yvonne - thankyou.
Oh I'd love a library sale like that. My local library always does one section at a time and it's been boring sections for AGES (travel, musty old reference books etc) I never see fiction books at all.. sadface.
